About Lafiya
At Lafiya, we're on a mission to make contraception accessible to anyone who needs it and wants it, no matter where they live. Through our network of dedicated female health professionals, our Lafiya Sisters, we provide information and deliver contraception directly to communities that need it most. Our approach is cost-effective, community-based, and deeply rooted in respect and agency. We operate in hard-to-reach communities that otherwise do not have access to contraceptive products and information. We currently run our core programme across four states in northern Nigeria, managing 500 Lafiya Sisters. In addition to our direct community-based work, we are partnering with the government to co-create sustainable financing models for contraception procurement and to address critical data and delivery gaps. To date, we have supported more than 500,000 women through our innovative last-mile approach.
We're a fast-growing nonprofit in the middle of a transition from a start-up to a scale-up. Our focus is on impact, cost-effectiveness, and ensuring our work enhances the dignity and agency of those we serve.
Position overview
The Security Risk Manager is a critical "enabler," ensuring that our teams can reach the most remote communities safely and with confidence. You will be the in-house expert in international security best practices, balancing rigorous risk management with our "acceptance strategy" and "Do No Harm" approach.
What You’ll Do
Operational Security & Personnel Protection
Subject Matter Expertise: Act as the Security Focal Point within the Lafiya and provide strategic advice on Crisis Management regarding evolving personnel risks.
Safety Frameworks: Champion and maintain the Security Management Plan (SMP) and conduct regular Security Risk Assessments (SRA) to ensure all operational protocols remain current.
Human Rights Advocacy: Implement and supervise adherence to the UN Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR), Anti Bribery and Corruption (ABC) practices and other critical safety policies such as Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and Grievance Mechanism.
Facility Safety: Conduct regular security vulnerability assessments and update the Security Management Plan and SOPs to ensure a safe environment for all staff, properties and commodities.
Strategic Partner & Logistics Coordination
Security Standard Setting: Define and periodically update minimum-security requirements for all external service providers including commodity warehouses, car service organisations, hotels, airlines, and ride-hailing apps; to ensure they align with Lafiya’s duty of care.
Transport & Transit Vetting: Audit third-party car services and ride-hailing platforms to ensure they meet strict safety criteria, focusing on driver reliability and vehicle serviceability for personnel movement.
Accommodation & Off-site Safety: Maintain effective communication lines with hotel and lodging management to ensure off-site staff safety, functional access control, and emergency infrastructure.
Aviation & Travel Liaison: Coordinate with airlines and travel agencies to monitor security conditions for air travel and provide staff with up-to-date travel advisories and logistical alignment.
Logistical Synchronization: Work closely with third-party warehouse managers and suppliers to ensure that the arrival and dispatch of commodities are coordinated safely without compromising the security of personnel.
Provider Compliance: Conduct regular reviews and monthly audits of warehouse and third-party service provider performance against Lafiya’s security SOPs, ensuring any deficiencies are addressed immediately.
Intelligence & Network Management
Apply a rigorous intelligence cycle—collecting and analysing data to provide the team with timely threat intelligence that protects staff and reputation.
Proactively alert colleagues to immediate threats or incidents using designated media, including Slack, WhatsApp, SMS and calls. You will support security incident tracking and mapping in our Areas of Operations to provide actionable insights for the team.
Deliver specialised route security training to all staff and partner logistics organisations to ensure safe transit across the Area of Responsibility (AoR).
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with local government officials and emergency services including Nigerian GSF. Build and maintain an extensive peer network with international groups (e.g., INSO, UNDSS, NGO Forum) and local communities to monitor threats to human movement.
Comply fully with Nigerian national security-related legislation and strive to achieve industry best practice as a responsible corporate citizen, recognising that such actions contribute to Lafiya’s standing and performance
Lead investigations into criminal acts against Lafiya personnel or property, ensuring witness statements are recorded according to Nigerian law and ethical standards.
Manage a secure key control system and ensure all security logs, registers, and digital work files are clear, consistent, up-to-date and backed up in the Cloud.
